Affiliated Hospital Welcomes Top German Gynecological Expert to Jointly Build an International-Standard Center

On March 26, the full-time appointment ceremony for Professor Hans Tinneberg, a renowned German gynecologist and Founding President of the European Endometriosis League (EEC), was held in the Administration Building of the Zhongshan Campus. Attendees included Jiang Yong, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Southwest Medical University and President of the Affiliated Hospital; Xu Yong, Party Secretary of the Affiliated Hospital; Fu Wenguang, Vice President of the Affiliated Hospital; and relevant personnel from the Department of Gynecology, the Hospital Office, the Human Resources Department, and the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation.

At the appointment ceremony, Jiang Yong put forward three requirements for Tinneberg's tenure: first, to take the lead in building a high-level endometriosis center; second, to deeply engage in the ongoing development of the gynecological oncology center; and third, to devote himself to cultivating a young team.

Xu Yong stated that the hospital will make every effort to foster an open, inclusive, and collaborative atmosphere and support Professor Tinneberg in carrying out his work with full autonomy. He expressed the hope that Professor Tinneberg, while actively engaging in clinical work, will bring advanced concepts, a rigorous work style, and an innovative spirit to the Department of Gynecology.

Tinneberg will be appointed to lead the establishment of an international-standard endometriosis center. This initiative marks that, building on the mature operation of the existing gynecological oncology center, the Department of Gynecology will add another center conforming to international standards for endometriosis, forming a “one department, two centers” development framework and continuously advancing the development of specialized disease centers.

As a leading academic authority in gynecological endoscopy and endometriosis, Professor Tinneberg has served as Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Giessen in Germany, President of the German Society for Reproductive Medicine, and President of the German Society for Gynecological Endoscopy. He was awarded Germany's “Lifetime Achievement Gold Medal in Gynecological Endoscopy” and is a leading figure in European gynecological medicine. Notably, in recent years, Professor Tinneberg has also led the establishment of the Endometriosis Center at Jagiellonian University in Poland and the East African Endometriosis Center in Kenya, accumulating extensive experience in building international-standard specialized disease centers from the ground up. The "laparoscopic sacral plexus neuromodulator implantation" pioneered by his team offers a revolutionary treatment option for intractable pelvic pain caused by deep infiltrating endometriosis.

Currently, the establishment of the Endometriosis Center is in full swing. The Affiliated Hospital will take this opportunity to deepen international medical cooperation, benchmark against first-class international standards, and strive to build a regional and even national hub for the diagnosis, treatment, and research of endometriosis, providing women with higher-quality and more compassionate health care.

As one of the founders of the endometriosis field in Europe, Tinneberg has devoted his life to advancing evidence-based, patient-centered standardized diagnosis and treatment. The European Endometriosis League, which he founded, remains a vital platform connecting leading endometriosis centers worldwide.

In 2026, the European Endometriosis League Congress officially established the “Hans Tinneberg Award” to honor global scholars who have made outstanding contributions in the field he pioneered. This award is not only the highest tribute to his lifelong dedication, but also a symbol of the enduring legacy of the principles he championed — collaboration, education, and humanistic care.

In March 2026, Tinneberg officially joined the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University on a full-time basis and will lead the establishment of an endometriosis center conforming to international standards.
